One of the obstacles that armstrong had to deal with was his life at a young age. His Father left his mother right after he was born, also his mother would earn money by being a prostitute. He lived with his grandmother until he was sent to a boy home for waif's. It was here in this home that he was introduced to music.
Another thing that he had to overcome is segregation. When Armstrong was in the fifth grade he had to drop out and work for a white family, some would say he was a slave to them. The neighborhood he grew up in was referred to as the "battlefield" because it was so poor it looked like there had just been a war there. He had to overcome a lot of segregation but he also did it very well, he was the first african american jazz player on the cover of life magazine. He also would only play in hotels that would let african americans stay at, or restaurants that would let them eat at.
